Latimer Hall
The original structural seismic resisting system of Latimer Hall (built in 1966) comprised of reinforced concrete frames in the longitudinal direction (made from reinforced concrete box columns and floor slabs) and slender reinforced concrete shear walls in the transverse direction. Both directions were found to be inadequate during a 1996 review, so a reinforced concrete retrofit solution was implemented. The longitudinal direction was retrofitted by the addition of a new 19-inch-thick reinforced concrete frame attached to the exterior of the building complete with new columns at each original box columns and new deep spandrel beams at every other floor. Additionally, the footings under each column were enlarged and the floor-to-wall connections were improved. In the transverse direction the slender exterior shear walls were also strengthened and thickened.
This University of California Berkeley building was retrofitted as a part of the SAFER Program (Seismic Action for Facilities Enhancement & Renewal) which systematically reviewed, prioritized, and constructed building retrofits for all UC Berkeley owned and operated buildings.
