Old Carquinez Bridge
There were two old Carquinez Bridges. Caltrans built a third (suspension bridge) and removed the old (middle) one from the 1920's. The 1950s bridge was retrofit with several different techniques, including putting shock devices on the superstructure to allow slow temperature movements but to stop fast earthquake movements. Rubber dampers were put on the tower legs to allow the towers to rock during the earthquake.
